About The Event
Dr. Steve Nash has explored the influence of Nordic mythology on Tove Jansson’s Moomin stories, revealing how these beloved tales are rooted in Scandinavian cultural traditions. His research highlights mythological themes and archetypes subtly woven into the Moomin universe, such as Snufkin’s resemblance to the wandering trickster figure and Moominmamma’s role as a nurturing, earth-mother archetype.
Dr Nash also examines how Jansson’s use of landscape evokes the mythic and liminal qualities found in Norse and Finnish folklore. He argues that the Moominvalley is not just a fantastical setting but a symbolic space rich with cultural resonance. Through this lens, Nash positions the Moomin books as more than children’s literature—revealing them as complex narratives reflecting deep Nordic mythological and emotional currents.
